What are the prerequisites?

Grade of "C" or better in MATH 096 or Accuplacer score of 61 or higher (algebra) within the last three years, and grade of "C" or better in RDNG 095 or Accuplacer Reading score of 58 or higher.

When does this course begin and end?

This course follows the academic calendar for the semester, January 11 – May 6, 2010.

Who is teaching this course?

Dr. Jeffrey Wood, School of Math and Science faculty.

What materials will I need?

Textbook:  Conceptual Physics 11th ed. by Paul G. Hewitt. Pearson/Addison Wesley

ISBN: 0321568095 (required).

The textbook is available in the bookstore bundled with the (optional) paperback workbooks listed below, as ISBN: 0321691008:

Practice Book for Conceptual Physics 11th ed. by P. G. Hewitt. Pearson/Addison Wesley

Problem Solving for Conceptual Physics 11th ed. by P. G. Hewitt. Pearson/Addison Wesley

Calculator: Scientific calculator (an inexpensive, non-graphing type is sufficient).

Will I have to meet face-to-face with the instructor or other students?

No face-to-face meetings are scheduled or required, however if you cannot take the final exam at the San Juan College main campus in Farmington, NM, you will need to arrange for a proctor. This has been done by dozens of students without issue and is explained in full detail in the course.

Will the course be hard for me?

This course covers a large volume of diverse material.  You will need to study a minimum of 15 hours a week reading the book, working on assignments, and preparing for tests.  The course consists of seven units that each requires homework problems, participation in a discussion board, a report, a quiz, and a test.  These assignments are based on comprehension and application of assigned reading.

Reading, writing, and keyboarding skills are essential to success in this class.  Additionally, students need a reliable computer, broadband internet connection, and strong self-discipline.

If you are unsure about the skills necessary to succeed in an on-line class, please complete the checklist in the link below to help you determine if you are sufficiently prepared to succeed in this course.
