Summary: Things to Keep in Mind When Searching for Native American Materials

  • Subject Headings are useful for narrowing down a search. But keep in mind that they are somewhat dated for Native American materials. Try a combination of keyword, title, and subject searching in order to capture variations of tribal names, for example.
  • Once you have found relevant items, look at the subject headings assigned to those items. This might give you additional ideas about your topic and ways to express it.
  • Remember to click on Display Related Subjects if you want to broaden your topic.
  • Don't forget that you can limit your results by type of material, location, etc.
Lesson Two will take you through a similar tutorial on searching an electronic database for journal articles.
