Welcome to the San Juan College School of Energy!

This site is your resource for information on our associate’s degree, certificate, and training programs.

We train and educate students with the most current industry required knowledge, and consistently revise and improve our programs and class offerings to meet both industry and student needs. In addition to degree and certificate programs, we also offer on-going foundational and advanced-level professional development courses for energy industry employees.

Associate’s Degree Programs

Industrial Apprenticeship Program (ENPO, INME, POPL)
The Industrial Apprenticeship Program is a partnership between Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) and the School of Energy’s Process Technology Program. Employees at the San Juan Generating Station progress through a formal 3-4 year apprenticeship program to advance to Journeyman status in their craft. These programs include Environmental Process Operations (ENPO), Industrial Maintenance Mechanic (INME), and Power Plant Operations (POPL).

Industrial Process Operator (IPOP)
The Industrial Process Operator Program (IPOP) prepares students for entry-level positions as operators of power generation, refineries, semiconductor, petrochemical, and pharmaceutical processes. With over $1.2 million worth of process equipment, the students obtain optimal hands-on experience to acquire safety and technical skills.

Industrial Maintenance Mechanic (MECH)
The Industrial Maintenance Mechanic program (MECH) is designed to equip students with the safety and technical skills to acquire positions as maintenance mechanics of power generation, mining, natural gas, refinery, semiconductor, petrochemical and pharmaceutical processes.

Lease Operator (LSOP)
The Lease Operator program provides technically oriented students with the basic knowledge and skills of production processes and equipment operation required to efficiently and safely monitor, troubleshoot and operate oil and natural gas wells and related surface equipment. Students learn in the classroom, in the yard, and during on-the-job training (OJT) with a sponsoring company in the field.

Natural Gas Compression (COMP)
The Natural Gas Compression program provides technically oriented students with the basic knowledge of natural gas compression equipment and the skills required to efficiently and safely maintain, troubleshoot, and operate compression packages. Courses cover the mechanical and technical aspects of compression technology specifically related to the natural gas industry. Students train in a classroom/shop setting, and work with a sponsoring company in the field.

Occupational Safety AAS Degree — Online (SAFE)
San Juan College has partnered with the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) and Texas A&M University-Commerce to offer safety professionals the opportunity to earn an AAS in Occupational Safety degree online. This degree allows students to transfer in college credits toward completion of the degree requirements and receive 18 credit hours for a completed TEEX CSHO certificate. (Students in the process of completing the CSHO may concurrently enroll in the Occupational Safety program.) Students without the CSHO are also eligible to enroll in the AAS degree program online; in lieu of the certificate, they will complete an additional 18 core credit hours.

Renewable Energy (RENG)
Students gain knowledge and skills necessary to design and safely install electrical energy systems based on current photovoltaic and power conditioning equipment. Utilities and remote power users already recognize this fast-growing sector of the electrical power industry as a viable and established energy alternative.
