Mountaineering Pico de Orizaba
March 21-29, 2009 (Spring Break)
Destination: Mexico City, MEXICO (Pico de Orizaba)
Trip Instructors: Josh Stratman, Josh Kling
Approximate Cost: $2300
Join the Outdoor Leadership Program for a High Altitude Mountaineering trip to El Pico de Orizaba in Mexico. Pico de Orizaba is an active but dormant volcano with an elevation of 18,710 feet. We will begin our trip by flying from Albuquerque into Mexico City and staying the night in a converted century-old soap factory. We will then take a 4x4 ride to Piedra Grande Hut nestled on the flanks of the mountain and prepare for our summit attempt. Our early morning summit attempt will take us up a route that involves glacier travel above 16,000 feet. Prior mountaineering experience is preferred but not required. Good physical condition is essential.

The History and Culture of Germany
May 14-28, 2009
Destination: Southern GERMANY
Trip Instructors: Chris Strouthopoulos, Kelly Robison
Approximate Cost: $3,000
The cities and towns of Germany reflect its long history of cobbled streets, open markets, and architecture that ranges from the medieval and Baroque to the Stalinist and the modern. The landscape ranges from broad sweeps of plains to mountains. This learning community will examine the history of the area from the beginnings of human settlement to the present through readings and through visiting the locations where that history occurred. Special emphasis will be placed on the World War II era and the Holocaust, thus providing a context for our visit to Sachsenhausen, a Nazi extermination camp, Berlin, the capital of Germany, as well as Nurnberg, the site of many Nazi rallies and the Nurnberg trials after the war.
