Equity Award
The San Juan College Board of Trustees was honored with the 2009 Equity Award from the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT), representing the Western Region. The award was presented at the ACCT’s leadership congress in San Francisco in October.
The award recognizes community college governing boards committed to achieving equity in education programs. San Juan College provides area residents with a pathway to higher education and a better future. The College promotes a culture of achievement that values equity, excellence and diversity. At the same time, the college’s Board of Trustees has embraced the challenge of welcoming a student population diverse in age and culture, background and life experience, educational goals, and learning skills and aptitudes.
Programs and services such as the Native American Learning Center, Promoting Native American Achievement through Health Care and Engaging Latino Communities for Education (ENLACE) provide forums for collaborative cultural, educational and social experiences at San Juan College and help to increase recruitment and retention of underrepresented students.
Members of the San Juan College board are R. Shane Chance, chairman; Kenneth Hare, vice chairman; Eva Stokely, secretary; Evelyn Benny, Chad King, Dr. Joseph Pope and Craig Walling, members.
