Benefits at a Glance

San Juan College offers many benefits from health care, life insurance, and retirement plans, to educational tuition waivers and fitness benefits.  Below is a brief description for prospective employees to gain an understanding of the benefits offered dependent on employment status. All benefits are contingent on administrative policies, provider agreements and state legislation. More detailed information and instructions for enrollment will be provided upon employment, at new employee orientation .

Health Insurance

Medical Coverage

Employees have the option of choosing coverage from three different plans; Presbyterian HMO Plan, Blue Cross Blue Shield HMO Plan, or Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO Plan. Dental Coverage

Comprehensive coverage is provided by Delta Dental. Diagnostic and preventative services are paid 100% by the plan with no deductible. Basic services are paid 80/20 ($50 deductible); and major services are paid 60/40 (deductible applies). Orthodontic services allow up to $2,000 lifetime maximum for children up to age 18 and $1,750 lifetime maximum for adults 18 and over. For more information please visit their website at .

Vision Coverage

Coverage is provided by Davis Vision and includes routine eye exams every 12 months, lenses every 12 months, frames every 24 months, and contacts every 12 months.  For more information please visit their website at .

Flexible Spending Account

The Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) offers you a convenient way to pay for medical and dependent care expenses while you save on your taxes. There are two types of accounts: medical reimbursement and dependent care reimbursement. You may elect to contribute a portion of your before-tax income each pay period to either or both of the accounts. This money, FREE OF TAXES, is used to reimburse you for eligible unreimbursed expenses incurred by you and your eligible family members during the year. Eligible expenses include healthcare copays, co-insurance, deductibles, prescriptions, and out of pocket expenses.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

The Solutions Group provides employees and their families with up to 3 free, confidential counseling sessions per event. Life Insurance

The life insurance coverage is through Securian (Minnesota Life). San Juan College offers a free $50,000 Basic Term Life insurance policy for benefit eligible employees, paid 100% by SJC. Short Term and Long Term Disability insurance is also available through Securian and paid 100% by the employee. Supplemental term life insurance is available in increments of $10,000 up to $150,000 for both the employee and their spouse/domestic partner. Dependent life insurance is available for dependents up to the age of 26 in the amounts of $5,000, $10,000, or $15,000. Both Supplemental Life and Dependent Life insurance is paid 100% by the employee.

Retirement Plan

The Educational Retirement Board (ERB) is a statutory entity responsible for administering the New Mexico Educational Retirement Act (ERA) to provide secure retirement benefits to teachers, administrators, and other employees within the States public school system, of higher learning, and educational agencies.

The ERB provides a defined benefit retirement plan funded by contributions from both employees and employers. Membership in the ERB plan is a condition of employment for employees who work more than 10 hours per week or teach more than 3 credit hours per semester. Learn more

For employees with annual wages of :

  • Over $20,000, the employer share is 13.9% of reportable compensation and the employee share is 10.7%.
  • Less than $20,000, the employer share is 13.9% of reportable compensation and the employee share is 7.9%.
  • Rates effective 7/1/14 to 6/30/16.
Alternate Retirement Plan

Faculty and selected professional staff have the choice of a state retirement plan or an alternative
retirement plan (ARP) administered by TIAA-CREF.

Additional Benefits

Tuition Waiver

Tuition is waived for up to 4 credit hours each semester with San Juan College or New Mexico Highlands University. A free membership is also available to the Health and Human Performance Center. A qualified family member 16 to 26 years of age may have tuition waived for up to 4 credit hours each semester and a free membership is also available to the Human Performance Center. A single-family member may utilize both waivers or two different family members may utilize a waiver each.

Employee Wellness Incentive

Regular full time and part time employees may use 30 minutes a day up to three times a week, not to exceed a total of 90 minutes, for a fitness activity at the HHPC (Health and Human Performance Center) or elsewhere on campus. This time must be used in conjunction with the employee’s regular lunch hour upon prior arrangements with the immediate supervisor. No more than 30 minutes per day can be added to a lunch hour for this purpose. This time can only be used for a fitness activity and cannot be used to extend or add to breaks or sick/annual leave time.

Library Services

Employees have full access to the San Juan College Library which includes; Books, Periodicals, DVDs, and CDs

  • 10% off of purchases made from Mary’s Kitchen
  • 10% off of Rentals from the HHPC
  • 40% off of select items from the Bookstore
  • Employees receive a free ticket for San Juan College events held in the Henderson Fine Arts building or the Little Theater. A guest of the employee may also receive a discounted ticket.
  • Employees  receive discounted tickets for all Touring Shows. A guest of the employee may also receive a discounted ticket.
  • Employees receive a free gym membership at the HHPC. One qualified dependent can also receive a free gym membership.
