Student Housing On Track for Fall Semester Occupancy
Nizhóní Sunrise Suites is the name of the new and long-awaited campus housing at San Juan College. “Campus housing has been a service the Board of Trustees and the College have wanted to provide our students for more than two decades,” says President Dr. Toni Hopper Pendergrass. “This fall, that dream will turn into a reality. We are so excited to be able to provide our full-time students with the opportunity to live the ‘suite life’ on campus.”
This 150-bed, three-floor building with one-, two- and four-bed units will provide an array of amenities for residents, including a spacious common area with a shared student kitchen, as well as TV/study areas on each floor. Residents will have 24-hour, on-campus security, free parking, fast Wi-Fi, and on-site laundry facilities. They can choose from three convenient and affordable meal plans to use at Mary’s Kitchen. The fully furnished suites have shared bathrooms, and each floor has access to a sizeable study area with whiteboards and ample seating.
Students will appreciate the outdoor activity space including a large courtyard with a grassy area and an outdoor grill. On the West side of the building, students can enjoy impressive fireside views from both inside and outside all year long with the large indoor/outdoor fireplace. Near the front entrance of the building, residents can air up their bicycle tires using the free air pump station.
Housing Residents Will Enjoy Improved Educational Experience
The close proximity to campus walking trails, SJC Health and Human Performance Center, disc golf course, and outdoor playing field are just some of the advantages to living on campus. Other benefits include meeting new people, developing lasting friendships and having convenient access to campus and student-sponsored events.
By living at Nizhóní Sunrise Suites, residents can easily connect with all the academic support services, including tutoring, mentoring, computer labs and the library. With a shorter commute, students have more time for studying, working on class projects or spending time with friends. Additionally, student housing residents tend to have improved educational experience and better academic performance.
Devin Anderson, the coordinator of Housing and Residential Life, will live on the premises and oversee campus housing. “I am so excited for the students to move in this fall,” says Anderson. “On-campus housing is a great opportunity for students to live in a safe and academically enriching environment, where they can thrive and experience campus life. Housing and Residence Life will usher in a new era for San Juan College, and I am grateful to play a part in that.” In addition to a coordinator, student residential assistants will live in the housing and help manage the facility, as well as encourage community among residents.
Dekker, Perich and Sabatini provided the architectural design for the 37,552 square-foot building, while the Jaynes Corporation served as the project construction manager. Construction began in February of 2021. Full-time students will find applications at sanjuancollege.edu/ housing. Watch for more information to come about the grand opening celebration this August!
