Honoring Hispanic and Latino Culture

This month-long observance honors the rich history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. Originally established as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968, the celebration was expanded to a full month in 1988, recognizing the vital role Hispanic and Latino individuals have played in shaping our nation.

A Month of Culture and Celebration

National Hispanic Heritage Month also marks the independence days of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Chile. It’s a time to highlight the vibrant art, traditional and popular foods, and cultural contributions that enrich our communities.

Events and Activities at San Juan College

The San Juan College Herencia Latina Center and ENLACE (Engaging Latino Communities for Education) have partnered with departments across campus to host a variety of events and activities in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. These events are designed to honor the culture, educate the community, and provide a space for celebration.

SJC Herencia Latina Center: Supporting Students and Celebrating Culture

The SJC Herencia Latina Center is dedicated to supporting students academically while celebrating and promoting Latino and Hispanic cultures. The Center fosters a welcoming and inclusive environment on campus, offering resources like financial aid assistance, scholarship opportunities, access to computers and software, service-learning programs, and mentorship.

Through the Herencia Latina Center, ENLACE provides additional support to students and their families. One of the most popular initiatives is the Student Ambassador Program, which selects students based on leadership, scholarship, and professionalism to promote education and community well-being.
