Honoring Excellence at the 2024 Graduation Ceremony

Executive Director Gayle Dean proudly presented the prestigious Lou and Ruth Allison Faculty Excellence Award on behalf of the San Juan College Foundation at this year's graduation ceremony.

Recognizing Lori Schiess

The 2024 recipient of the Allison Award is Lori Schiess, a dedicated professor in the San Juan College (SJC) School of Science, Math, and Engineering, For 13 years, Schiess has consistently demonstrated total reliability, earning the trust and respect of her colleagues and students. "Her efforts and expertise have impacted countless students continuing in health degree programs," says Dean, adding, "Schiess has never wavered in her 100% commitment to her students and San Juan College."

Pioneering Educational Interventions

As part of the SJC anatomy team of instructors, Schiess has been instrumental in pioneering hands-on interventions that enhance student study skills and success rates. She organized a regional Human Anatomy and Physiology (HAPs) conference at San Juan College, attracting educators and speakers from colleges across the Southwest.

Contributions Beyond the Classroom

Schiess played a vital role in preparing for SJC's accreditation process. She dedicated her time to gathering evidence, writing arguments, and coordinating with others to showcase SJC's excellence. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Schiess serves on the Web Advisory and Online Quality Assurance teams, striving to improve online courses for SJC students. She also contributed significantly to the curriculum committee, serving as a member, vice-chair, and chair over five years. Furthermore, she initiated a student club and is an active member of the Global Studies Committee.

About the Allison Award

The Allison Award, one of the most prestigious accolades for San Juan College faculty members, includes a $2,000 stipend. Established in 1986 by Ruth and the late Lou Allison of Farmington, the award honors faculty members who demonstrate a commitment to both their students and their academic disciplines.
