San Juan College Foundation Honors Rabe Yazzie

The San Juan College Foundation is delighted to announce Rabe Yazzie as the 2024 recipient of the Sumant Krishnaswamy Memorial Award for Excellence in Tutoring. This prestigious award, which includes a $500 stipend, honors the legacy of Sumant Krishnaswamy.

Celebrating Sumant Krishnaswamy’s Legacy

Sumant Krishnaswamy, originally from India, earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering before moving to the United States, where he completed his doctorate in astronomy at the University of Maryland. In 1997, he and his family relocated to the Four Corners area, where he began teaching science education Encore classes at San Juan College. Krishnaswamy played a pivotal role in the professionalization of the SJC Tutoring Center, profoundly impacting both students and tutors. His dedication to meeting the tutoring needs at SJC has created a lasting legacy.

A Legacy of Excellence in Tutoring

Since its inception in 2017, the Sumant Krishnaswamy Memorial Award has recognized eight outstanding tutors, several of whom had the privilege of knowing Krishnaswamy personally. The 2024 award recipient, Rabe Yazzie, first sought help at the tutoring center in 2013 and was mentored by Krishnaswamy. Yazzie has since excelled as a tutor and is currently pursuing his teaching license.

Commitment to Student Success

San Juan College is proud to have dedicated tutors like Rabe Yazzie contributing to student success. The Foundation extends its best wishes to Yazzie in his teaching career and looks forward to his continued impact on students.
