Launch Your Career with San Juan College’s Heavy Equipment Operator Program

San Juan College’s School of Energy is driving workforce innovation with its 12-week Heavy Equipment Operator Program, developed in collaboration with regional industry leaders and the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).

This program addresses a growing demand for skilled operators, with over 11,000 unique job postings in the four-state region in the past year alone. Graduates of the program are equipped with 10 globally recognized industry credentials and positioned to earn an average annual salary of $55,000. Additionally, students who obtain their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) through San Juan College see their job opportunities nearly double, unlocking even greater earning potential.

Preparing Students for Workforce Success

“Our mission is to see every student succeed, not just in the classroom, but on the job site,” said Rory Truby, SJC School of Energy Director of Transportation. "This 12-week training program is designed to equip our students with the hands-on skills and technical knowledge needed to excel in a competitive industry. From operating heavy machinery to understanding safety protocols, we ensure they're entry-level workforce-ready and prepared to make an immediate impact.”

Affordable, Accessible, and Industry-Focused Training

San Juan College offers one of New Mexico’s most affordable heavy equipment operator programs. With only two such programs in the state—one offered only periodically—SJC provides students with a unique and accessible opportunity.

Students can take advantage of multiple funding options, including Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) funding, to help offset costs. A $775,000 donation from the New Mexico Legislative Delegation has also allowed the college to provide state-of-the-art equipment, offering students cutting-edge industry experience.

High-Demand Skills for Expanding Industries

Heavy equipment operators are essential across various industries, including construction, energy, agriculture, remediation, and more. With the growth of infrastructure projects and renewable energy installations, demand for skilled operators continues to rise, making this training program an ideal pathway to a stable and rewarding career.
